Annual Report
2010
Dear Friends,This year, Lucile Packard Children’s Hospital celebrates 20 years of service to children and expectant mothers, to our partners and our community, to the science of pediatric and obstetric care, and to the education and training of future providers. Our anniversary celebration echoes the joy of our patients and families when they see their newborn for the first time; when our innovative, compassionate care turns a child’s illness toward recovery; or when prevention, diagnosis and intervention help avert disease altogether. At the same time, our inspiration and motivation for the future comes from those patients for whom we strive daily to find a cure.
At Packard Children’s, close collaboration begins here, on our campus, with everything under one roof, innovators in various specialties working across the hall from one another, and researchers and care providers working shoulder to shoulder. From this hub, our network of care links us to other hospitals and clinics, where we extend our reach. In every location, our care philosophy of including all voices, from parents to patients to nurses to doctors and other team members, embraces the idea that innovations and care breakthroughs can come from anyone at any time and may be great or small. This is "The Power of We."
For our platinum anniversary, this annual report demonstrates why Packard Children’s at 20 is so unique: we’re old enough to be a leader, yet young enough to have unlimited potential. Our relative youth allows us to approach innovation and care delivery with a fresh eye, as you’ll see in the stories contained in this report.
Our commitment to grow and thrive with our patient population continues. In fiscal year 2010, Packard Children’s 2,752 employees, 817 medical staff and 752 volunteers cared for 4,580 individual obstetric inpatients and 5,947 pediatric inpatients. We saw 140,353 clinic visits, delivered 4,574 babies, and served patients from 38 states and six countries. Our research and outreach improved patient outcomes across the country, while close to home we provided treatment for 67 percent of obstetric patients and 76 percent of pediatric patients from our local communities who required hospitalization.
Representing these many thousands of people, "We" are proud to share, in this 20th anniversary annual report, a look at our history, a celebration of our present and a glimpse into our future. From the first few children who convalesced on this property in 1919 to the children and expectant mothers who come to us today for the most advanced, multidisciplinary care, the patients and families of Packard Children’s continue to be the driving force behind all that we do. We hope you find their stories as inspiring as we do.
Sincerely,
| Christopher G. Dawes President and Chief Executive Officer |
