Annual Report
2008
Dear Friends,When innovation takes root, possibilities flourish. And so they have at Lucile Packard Children’s Hospital, where, for more than 17 years, the latest in medical research has informed our compassionate care for children, adolescents and expectant mothers. We’re thrilled to mark another year of growth and achievement, and proudly provide this annual report (PDF) as your invitation to celebrate and grow along with us.
In every aspect of patient care, on the front lines and behind the scenes, pioneers at Packard Children’s are sewing the seeds of the future in pediatric and obstetric medicine. Cultivating the highest standards of care across specialties is a coordinated effort of mutual expertise shared by all our team members. And our patients, who so often are the courageous recipients of groundbreaking treatments, are always our source of inspiration.
In this annual report, we take a close look at the surgical successes and innovations of the past year, including the opening of our state-of-the-art Ford Family Surgical Center. We also reflect on the impact we’ve made in cancer treatment and stem cell therapy, with another new opening: our Bass Center for Childhood Cancer and Blood Diseases. You’ll also find details about the research and innovation that takes place in the Johnson Center and distinguishes our care of high-risk obstetric and premature neonatal patients.
We also celebrate our first year with Hugh O’Brodovich, MD, Packard Children’s new Adalyn Jay Physician-in-Chief and the Arline and Pete Harman Professor and Chair of the Department of Pediatrics at Stanford University School of Medicine. Dr. O’Brodovich has already made a remarkable impression on the Packard Children’s of today, as well as our plan for tomorrow.
We also highlight just a few of our many community benefit programs, which extend our services and our excellent staff across the Bay Area and beyond, to support the health of our entire community.
Through these and many other programs, and through the expansion of our facilities, Packard Children’s is caring for more patients than ever before. Last fiscal year alone, Packard Children’s 2,600 employees, 835 medical staff and 648 volunteers served 10,537 children and expectant mothers as inpatients and delivered 5,137 babies. We saw 134,326 clinic visits and served patients from 39 states and eight countries. And while we reach far and wide, close to home we provided treatment for 70 percent of obstetric patients and 80 percent of pediatric patients from our local communities who required hospitalization.
While these statistics reflect our reach, they can’t possibly capture the significant personal experiences of the individual patients and families who have turned to us for care. As we showcase our progress we are always delighted to know that, as Packard Children’s grows and improves, it is our community of patients and families who benefit most of all.
Sincerely,
| Christopher G. Dawes President and Chief Executive Officer |
