Heart to Heart Program on Growing Up

  • 90 families attended the "For Boys Only" sessions, 154 families attended the "For Girls Only" sessions and 83 families attended three lectures for mothers with sons, fathers with daughters, and a lecture about talking with your kids about growing up.

Becoming Parents Perinatal Education Series

  • 3,495 families attended programs focusing on vaginal and cesarean childbirth for first time or experienced parents; breastfeeding; sibling preparation; new family and grandparents programs; infant care, safety, massage and CPR; prenatal yoga and Pilates; and programs for parents expecting multiples.

Parent Information and Referral Center (PIRC)

  • PIRC answered 12,839 calls, a majority of which originated from San Mateo and Santa Clara counties.

  • More than 34 percent of the calls concerned illness, 19 percent concerned newborn issues and 21 percent concerned general health questions.

  • PIRC was able to divert 119 potential inappropriate emergency room visits.

  • PIRC nurses called 5,500 parents of newborns born at Lucile Packard Children’s Hospital to see how the family was doing and to introduce the PIRC service.

Teenage Health Resource Line

  • Teens placed 1,126 calls to the Teenage Health Resource Line.

  • Most calls concerned sexual practices, diet and nutrition issues, illness and referral to community resources.

  • 27 percent of calls were from teenage boys.

  • Callers ranged from 12-19 years of age, with the majority between 15-18 years old or high school students.

  • More than one-third of the callers had called previously.

  • A majority of the calls originated from San Mateo, Santa Clara, San Francisco and Alameda counties.

Safe Kids Coalition

  • The Safe Kids child passenger safety committee conducted nine check-up events, inspecting more than 500 car seats from Daly City to Morgan Hill.

  • These check-ups confirmed national statistics that over 85 percent of all car seats are not installed correctly and thus do not provide optimal protection.

  • Safe Kids sponsored a four-day National Highway Traffic Safety child-passenger certification course and an annual refresher course which drew 44 law enforcement officials, firefighters, nurses and others concerned about child passenger safety.
