PALO ALTO, Calif. -- How do broadband communications and new technologies play a role in the care of patients at Lucile Packard Children’s Hospital at Stanford? Can these tools help reduce health care costs? Federal Communications Chairman Julius Genachowski and U.S. Representative Anna Eshoo will find out during a two-hour tour and demonstration at the hospital Monday (3).Highlights

Pediatric surgeon Sanjeev Dutta, MD, will narrate video of a surgery in progress at Packard Children’s and discuss how broadband technologies provide surgical advancements in Packard’s new pediatric operating rooms, which are considered the most advanced on the West Coast.

Daniel Murphy, MD, director of the pediatric cardiac clinical program, will discuss and demonstrate how transmitting echocardiograms via broadband from remote hospital locations can help us quickly determine the severity of a newborn’s heart condition.

Darius Moshfeghi, MD, will present his Stanford University Network for Diagnosis of Retinopathy of Prematurity (SUNDROP) network. SUNDROP utilizes fiber optic cameras to deliver remote screening of retinopathy of prematurity among preemies at locations such as Dominican Hospital, Washington Hospital, Santa Clara Valley Medical Center and O'Connor Hospital.
