Moving from Pediatric to Adult Cardiac Care
As treatments for congenital heart defects improve, Children’s Heart Center patients are living longer and outgrowing pediatric care. When teenagers with congenital heart defects reach adulthood, their care is transitioned to the Stanford Hospital & Clinics’s Adult Congenital Heart Disease Center.
The two Centers make this transition as seamless as possible by:
- Starting the discussion about the eventual move to adult care with patients as young as 13 years old
- Giving young patients the skills they need to fully understand their long-term risks, limits and symptoms
- Helping patients learn to describe their diagnosis
- Preparing growing patients to manage their own care and live independently
- Providing a shared specialist: Dr. Daniel Murphy (right) is the director of the Adult Congenital Heart Disease Center and a pediatric cardiologist at the Children’s Heart Center
