How to Prepare for a Cardiopulmonary Exercise Stress Test

 
A female child performing an exercise stress testThe cardiopulmonary (heart-lungs) exercise stress test is administered by doctors and specialists at the Cardiopulmonary Exercise Laboratory in the Children’s Heart Center. The test progressively challenges the heart, lungs and muscles of the body for an extended period of time.

One Day Before the Cardiopulmonary Exercise Stress Test

Parents should:
  • Gather all of your child’s health history information
  • Gather all of your child’s health insurance information
  • Prepare a list of all medications (over-the-counter and prescription) and supplements that your child is currently taking
  • Speak to your child about any concerns or questions and talk about the expectations and reasons for the cardiopulmonary exercise stress test
Patients should:
  • Drink plenty of fluids
  • Get a good night’s rest
  • Regularly take medications, unless told otherwise

The Day of the Cardiopulmonary Exercise Stress Test


Parents should:
  • Bring all of your child’s health history information
  • Bring all of your child’s health insurance information
  • Bring a list of all medications (over-the-counter and prescription) and supplements that your child is currently taking
  • Get to the hospital early to allow time for parking and registration
  • Encourage your child to perform to his or her best ability and effort
Patients should:
  • Not exercise or participate in sports
  • Not drink alcoholic beverages or drink/eat caffeinated drinks or food
  • Not smoke cigarettes or cigars or use any products containing tobacco
  • Not use bath and body lotions or moisturizing products on the arms, chest or legs
  • Eat a light meal/snack about 2 to 3 hours prior to the cardiopulmonary exercise stress test:
    • For example, if the cardiopulmonary exercise stress test is scheduled at 8:00 am then eat a light breakfast meal at 5:00 am and no later than 6:00 am. 
  • Take medications as usual, unless told otherwise
  • Wear athletic clothing:
  • Shirt – Wear a comfortable t-shirt and/or sports bra
  • Shorts or Sweatpants – Do not wear jeans or khaki pants
  • Shoes – Do not wear boots, heels, open-toed shoes or sandals
