Pediatric Heart Surgery Volume by Year and Patient Age

Pediatric Cardiothoracic Surgery Volume by Year

The graph below shows, by year, the approximately 4,000 pediatric cardiothoracic surgical procedures that the Children’s Heart Center performed between 2002-2009. This volume makes us one of the largest programs in the United States.

Multiple studies show that high volume programs produce better outcomes. We have created an environment to produce outstanding outcomes without sacrificing the important individual patient and family-centered care for which Packard Childrens’ Hospital is famous.

Pediatric Cardiothoracic Surgery Volume by Patient Age

The graph below shows, by patient age, the approximately 4,000 pediatric cardiothoracic surgical procedures we performed between 2002-2009.

A majority of our pediatric heart surgeries were performed on children age 1 or younger, including over 300 premature babies. Our cardiothoracic surgeons are among the world leaders in repairing heart conditions in very small, very young children – especially premature infants. Our team’s goal is to diagnose and treat a child’s heart condition as early in life as possible. This gives a child the best possible chance for healthy growth and development.
