Pain Management

Our team routinely uses regional and general anesthesia during minimally invasive pediatric heart surgery. Jointly developed by pediatric anesthesiologists and heart surgeons at LPCH, this novel approach offers significant patient advantages over conventional anesthesia. For example, the child can have breathing tubes removed earlier. This means the child spends less time in the intensive care unit and can go home earlier.

Patients at the Pediatric Heart Center also have access to the most sophisticated pain and symptom management techniques, including novel drugs and procedures. Our team develops a personalized approach for each patient, depending on his or her needs.

The majority of patients, including infants, also undergo nontraditional approaches such as acupuncture, a technique that has been shown to provide excellent pain control.
