What Is Pulmonary Vascular Disease?

Dr. Jeffrey Feinstein, Program Director
Dr. Jeffrey Feinstein,
Program Director

Pulmonary vascular disease is a complex and increasingly diagnosed disease. In pulmonary hypertension (PH), the blood pressure in the pulmonary (lung) arteries is abnormally high. The arteries resist the pressure and react by narrowing. This causes the right side of the heart to become enlarged due to the increased workload of pumping blood against this resistance. If not corrected, a person with pulmonary hypertension develops progressive heart failure.

The Wall Center for Pulmonary Vascular Disease

The Wall Center for Pulmonary Vascular Disease offers evaluation and advanced therapeutic services for children and adults with pulmonary hypertension. Our program is one of the largest of its kind in the western United States. The pediatric component of the Wall Center is part of the Children’s Heart Center.

The Wall Center brings together a unique team of experts, including adult and pediatric cardiologists, pulmonologists, transplant surgeons and basic scientists. We provide comprehensive diagnostic and therapeutic services and evaluate patients for participation in clinical trials.

The Center also works closely with the Stanford Lung/Heart-Lung Transplantation program to offer patients the full range of treatment options. Treatment recommendations and follow-up care are developed through close collaboration with your child’s doctor and clinical care team.
