Wall Center for Pulmonary Vascular Disease

Wall Center for Pulmonary Vascular Disease Overview

The Wall Center for Pulmonary Vascular Disease is one of the few centers in the United States currently offering diagnostic and advanced therapeutic services to both adults and children with pulmonary hypertension.

Although pulmonary hypertension is rare in children (about three in one million), it can be devastating for the family.  In pulmonary hypertension, the blood pressure in the pulmonary (lung) arteries is abnormally high. The arteries resist the pressure and react by narrowing, thus causing right side of the heart to become enlarged due to the increased workload of pumping blood against this resistance.  Eventually, the child develops progressive heart failure.

Care for these children is provided by a team of experts in pulmonary hypertension, including physicians, clinical nurse specialists, pharmacists and social workers.  The Center brings together adult and pediatric specialists in cardiologypulmonary medicinecardiovascular surgery, vascular biology and other disciplines.

The Center provides comprehensive diagnostic modalities, including:
The Center also offers a complete range of therapies, including:

Information for Referring Physicians

We are happy to discuss patients with referring physicians seeking information on the phone or via e-mail.  Joint consultations between the adult and pediatric teams can be arranged on an as-needed basis.
  • For patient appointments, call (650) 724-4123
  • For additional information or to discuss a referral, call (650) 724-9255 or (800) 640-9255
Following the initial consultation, a faculty physician will contact the referring physician to discuss findings and recommendations.  At the request of the referring physician, patients with major symptoms despite empiric therapy may be admitted to the Intensive Care Unit at Lucile Packard Children's Hospital.  Treatment recommendations and follow-up care are developed through close collaboration with the referring physician.
