What to Expect as a Program for Placental Disorders Patient

The Program for Placental Disorders provides you and your baby with expert care from a multidisciplinary team while helping you through an anxious time. As a Program for Placental Disorders patient, you should also expect clear communication and a coordinated team approach.

Central Point of Coordination

The Program for Placental Disorders provides you with a central point of entry and coordination. We are here to provide you with the information, support and resources you need. You can contact us at (650) 724-2221, Monday-Friday, 7:30 am-4:30 pm. You will speak with Stephanie Neves, our Administrative Coordinator.

Making Appointments and Scheduling Tests

We will help you arrange all of your Packard Children’s Hospital tests and appointments. Our team will make every effort to:
  • Make the schedule as convenient as possible for you and your family
  • Minimize the number of times you have to come to the hospital
We will help arrange accommodations for your stay if you are traveling from a distance.

First Appointment

Program for Placental Disorders Medical Director Dr. Deirdre Lyell performs an ultrasound exam.Your first Program for Placental Disorders appointment will include an ultrasound. We will then speak with your obstetrician to discuss next steps and if/how our program can help with your pregnancy care.

We Work Together with Your Obstetrician

The Program for Placental Disorders team can work with your obstetrician, at his or her request, to co-manage your pregnancy care. Throughout your pregnancy, we will communicate with your obstetrician about your appointments and the care you and your baby receive at Packard Children’s Hospital.

During Your Pregnancy

Standard care for our patients often includes:
  • Pelvic rest
  • Administration of steroids. Steroids help to accelerate your baby’s lung development since women with placental disorders often require early delivery.
Our goal is for you to stay in your local community for as long as is safe. You may be hospitalized in the Packard Children’s Hospital Antepartum Unit if you lack transportation to get to the hospital quickly, live a distance away, or experience complications.
