You have three options when selecting a General Obstetrics Clinic provider for your pregnancy. Each is dedicated to making your pregnancy a safe, pleasant and comfortable experience. You will be asked to choose a provider at your first General Obstetrics Clinic visit, or shortly thereafter. (If you are a high-risk obstetrics patient, please visit the high-risk obstetrics page for information).

Our providers work as a team and provide medical coverage for each other. The provider you see in clinic may not be at your delivery. However, qualified members of the general obstetrics team are on call 24 hours a day, 7 days a week in our Labor and Delivery unit.

Part of Lucile Packard Children's Hospital mission as a teaching hospital is to train health care providers. Our resident physicians will be involved in some aspect of your obstetric care. You may also meet medical students and nursing students. An attending provider always supervises residents and students.

Provider Option 1: Attending Physician

Our attending general obstetric specialists are licensed physicians who have completed medical school and four years of obstetrics and gynecology (OB/GYN) resident training. These physicians have their own clinics and also supervise residents’ clinics. View a list of our attending general obstetricians.

Your Delivery
When you come to the Labor and Delivery unit, the attending and resident physicians who are working in Labor and Delivery will be responsible for your care. This means:
  • The attending physician you see in clinic may not be the attending at your delivery.
  • We cannot honor requests to exclude male or female physicians from being present at your delivery.
Residents are always involved in Packard Children’s Hospital deliveries. The attending physician will supervise the care provided by the resident and has overall responsibility for your care.

Provider Option 2: Resident Physician

Obstetrics and gynecology (OB/GYN) residents are licensed physicians. They work closely with our attending physicians to continue their medical training in obstetrics and gynecology. After completing their four years of residency, they are certified as OB/GYN generalists.

Clinic Visits
A resident physician will be responsible for your care throughout your pregnancy. An attending physician always supervises our residents.

Please note that we cannot honor requests to exclude male or female physicians from seeing you during your clinic visits

Your Delivery
The resident physician you typically see in the General Obstetrics Clinic will make every effort to be present at your delivery. If this is not possible, another resident working in Labor and Delivery will deliver your baby. An attending physician will supervise the care provided by the resident and has overall responsibility for your care.

Please note that we cannot honor requests to exclude male or female physicians from being present at your delivery.

Provider Option 3: Nurse Practitioner (NP) or Certified Nurse Midwife (CNM)

The obstetric nurse practitioner (NP) and certified nurse midwife (CNM) provide routine care to patients with uncomplicated pregnancies. View a list of our nurse practitioners and certified nurse midwives.

Your Delivery
Nurse practitioners and certified nurse midwives do not attend deliveries. When you come to the Labor and Delivery unit, the attending and resident physicians who are working in Labor and Delivery will be responsible for your care.
