- With a medical condition. Examples:
- Lupus, rheumatoid arthritis, and other auto-immune conditions
- Diabetes Mellitus
- Cancer
- Epilepsy
- Chronic hypertension
- Pre-eclampsia
- Renal (kidney) disease
- Heart disease
- Pulmonary (lung) disease
- Solid organ transplantation
- Infectious diseases (HIV, hepatitis B, hepatitis C, cytomegalovirus (CMV), and other perinatal infections)
- Rh incompatibility
- Thyroid problems and other endocrine disorders
- Blood clotting disorders (antiphospholipid syndrome or thrombophilias)
- Bariatric surgery patients
- Whose baby has a medical condition. The medical care for these babies and their mothers is coordinated through the Center for Fetal and Maternal Health.
- With a previous history of complicated pregnancies and/or premature birth, including:
- Pre-eclampsia and other pregnancy-induced high blood pressure conditions
- Preterm labor
- Cervical insufficiency
- Preterm premature rupture of membranes (PPROM)
- Recurrent pregnancy loss
- Uterine and placental abnormalities
- Intrauterine growth restriction (IUGR)
- Carrying multiple babies (complicated twins, or triplets or more)
