A new mother and father with their baby who was born at Packard Children's HospitalLucile Packard Children’s Hospital’s Charles B. and Ann L. Johnson Center for Pregnancy and Newborn Services is dedicated to the health and well-being of child-bearing families, from conception through infancy.

We are the only children’s hospital in the Bay Area – and one of the few in the country – to offer obstetric, neonatal and developmental medicine services all in one place. Whether your pregnancy is high-risk or routine, you and your baby will have the very best care, all within the same facility.

Prenatal Care for Low- and High-Risk Pregnancies

Packard Children’s Hospital Obstetrics Clinic physicians and nurse practitioners care for pregnant women who need general, high-risk or diabetes-related care. Our team cares for pregnant women with normal pregnancies, and for those who have a medical condition, history of complicated pregnancies, or are carrying multiples.

We provide a full range of diagnostic, treatment, consultation and genetic counseling services to pregnant women in our five state-approved Perinatal Diagnostic Centers. Our centers in Palo Alto, Fremont, Salinas, Santa Cruz and Mountain View enable you to access our care while staying close to home while we work closely with your OB.

Coordinated care for fetal health issues. Should your baby have complex health issues, our Center for Fetal and Maternal Health will coordinate a comprehensive, multidisciplinary care team of subspecialists and services specific to your and your baby’s needs.

Deliver Your Baby in a Hospital that Is Ready for Any Situation

Packard Children’s Hospital’s highly specialized obstetric and pediatric services mean that our Labor and Delivery team is ready for a normal delivery or one with complications. A multidisciplinary team of Packard Children’s Hospital pediatric subspecialists and Stanford Hospital & Clinics adult subspecialists only need to travel down a hallway — not a freeway — to help you and your baby.

Stay with your baby at all times. Whether your new baby stays in the Maternity Unit with you or goes to one of our nurseries for more specialized care, the two of you are always in the same building.

Specialized Care after Birth

Neonatal Intensive Care Unit (NICU) care. Our nationally-recognized Neonatal Intensive Care Unit (NICU) provides the highest level of care for the most critically ill, smallest newborns with complex care needs. Our NICU is equipped to support babies that require ventilator support and ECMO and those that have problems present at birth and/or require surgery or other highly specialized care. Our Neonatology team can quickly help babies born at Packard Children’s, or can help to transport a baby to Palo Alto.

Support and services to get your baby home. Babies who do not require, or no longer require, NICU care stay in our Level II nurseries. Our Level II nursery staff focus on your baby’s nutrition, growth and development, and teach you how to care for your baby at home. The nurseries are located throughout the greater Bay Area to allow you to stay closer to home while receiving the same high quality of care you expect from our main hospital in Palo Alto.

Monitoring Development and Behavior

Developmental-Behavioral Pediatrics provides a number of services to monitor and support the development and behavior of children. The team provides support and care to NICU babies. They also provide services for children born prematurely and for those at high-risk for developmental or behavioral problems due to prematurity or medical conditions. Developmental-behavioral pediatricians also provide consultations for all children who have a concerning aspect to their development or behavior.
