Pediatric Intestinal Transplant Program

Important Change to Hospital Visitation Policy

Effective October 19, 2009, Lucile Packard Children’s Hospital will no longer allow non-patient visitors or family members under the age of 16 years to visit in the hospital. This policy will be in effect during the height of the flu season, usually lasting until spring, and will be re-evaluated at that time. Over the past decade, intestinal transplantation (also known as pediatric small bowel transplant) has progressed from an experimental procedure to a life-saving therapy. Major advancements in surgical techniques, immunosuppressive medications, infection prevention and treatment, optimum patient selection, and timely placement on the transplant waiting list have contributed to significantly improved outcomes.

The Pediatric Intestinal Transplant Program at Lucile Packard Children’s Hospital (LPCH) is the only program in Northern California that performs intestinal transplantation in children. Drawing on the capability of the hospital’s internationally recognized Pediatric Liver Transplant Program, the Intestinal Transplant Program began in 2001 with a team of surgeons representing more than 25 years of combined transplant experience. As of October, 2003, LPCH has performed seven intestinal transplants.
