Pediatric Liver Transplant Program

Important Change to Hospital Visitation Policy

Effective October 19, 2009, Lucile Packard Children’s Hospital will no longer allow non-patient visitors or family members under the age of 16 years to visit in the hospital. This policy will be in effect during the height of the flu season, usually lasting until spring, and will be re-evaluated at that time. Dr. Carlos Esquivel is Chief of the Pediatric Liver Transplant Program at Lucile Packard Children's Hospital
Launched in 1995, the internationally recognized Pediatric Liver Transplant Program at Lucile Packard Children’s Hospital has performed over 200 liver transplants in children and is currently following over 450 pediatric patients, both pre- and posttransplant. Directed by Dr. Carlos Esquivel (right), our team of experts performs an average of 25 pediatric liver transplants annually and has one of the highest success rates in the nation.

What makes this degree of success remarkable is that two-thirds of the children transplanted at Packard Children's are young, under two years old, and small, weighing less than 4.5 kilograms. Over recent years our patients have become more complex and challenging, with some requiring pediatric small bowel transplantation as well as liver transplantation.

Since Packard Children's is a teaching hospital, our surgeons train the next generation of transplant physicians and pursue research to advance the science of liver transplantation and improve patient outcomes. Because our program is a leader in teaching and research, your child receives the most advanced care available.
