Stellar Pediatric Liver Transplantation Success Rates and Volume

The internationally-recognized Lucile Packard Children's Hospital Liver Transplant Program is consistently one of the top three pediatric liver transplant centers in the country for volume and outcomes. Our program launched in 1995.

Volume. Our team of experts has performed over 500 liver transplants in children. We perform an average of 30 pediatric liver transplants per year.

Success rates. Most importantly, our outcomes are exceptional compared to other high-volume centers. According to data released in January 2012, our program:
  • Achieved a 100 percent one year post-transplant patient survival rate. The national average was 94.24 percent.
  • Achieved a one year organ (graft) survival of 98.15 percent. The national average was 88.715 percent. Our survival rate was statistically higher than predicted outcomes based on data prepared by the Scientific Registry of Transplant Recipients (SRTR).
Outcomes may be viewed on the Scientific Registry of Transplant Recipients (SRTR) Web site. SRTR Transplant Program Reports describe the activity and outcomes at each transplant center in the United States. This data is updated every six months.

Liver Transplantation for the Sickest of Children

The Liver Transplant team cares for children with all types of liver disease. Many of our patients require transplantation for liver cancer, require combined organ transplants, or are considered by other hospitals to be too young or too sick to transplant. Additionally:
  • Two-thirds of our patients are under 2 years of age
  • Many of our patients weigh less than 6 kilograms (~13 pounds)
Our pediatric liver transplant patients receive organs from both living donors and deceased donors. Depending on your child’s condition and donor, we may transplant an entire donor liver or a partial organ which will grow with your child.

Family-Centered, Continuous Care for Your Child

Our care plan for your child is always based on family-centered care. We work in partnership with you and encourage you to take an active role in your child’s care. We believe that your family’s participation in the health care team will improve your child’s care.

Our liver transplant team follows your child from time of the referral, throughout the transplant process, after the transplant, and up until your child is ready to be transitioned to an adult care provider.

Our outreach program extends this care to patients throughout California and to those in Washington, Oregon, New Mexico, Hawaii and Nevada.
