The Genetic Skin Diseases Clinic provides expert consultation on the diagnosis and management of children with complex, hereditary disorders that primarily affect the skin. We also provide diagnostic consultation for children with a probable genetic disorder in which skin changes may be a clue to the diagnosis. Our clinic is staffed by pediatric dermatology and genetics teams.

Examples of the types of disorders we work with include, but are not limited to:
  • Albinism
  • Ectodermal dysplasias
  • Ehlers-Danlos syndrome
  • Ichthyoses
  • Incontinentia pigmenti
  • Premature aging syndromes
Long-term follow-up of children with hereditary skin disorders is done in the general Pediatric Dermatology Clinic and Genetics Clinic, if needed.

Patient Referrals

Please contact our nurse coordinator to discuss if this is the right clinic for your child.  New patients require a referral from an MD. The patient consultation form (PDF) should be completed and faxed to (650) 736-0736.

What to Expect

Prior to your appointment, a member of the genetics team will contact you to:
  • Obtain background medical and family history
  • Help arrange for relevant laboratory results, imaging studies, and medical records to be sent to us
Our pediatric dermatology and genetics teams will examine your child during the clinic visit. The physicians will meet immediately after the examination to discuss your child's possible diagnostic and therapeutic options and provide you with a comprehensive plan. Full reports from the dermatology and genetics teams will be sent to your referring physician.
