Services Overview

The Orthopedic Clinic at Lucile Packard Children's Hospital provides consultation and treatment for musculoskeletal conditions and diseases in children and in adults with residuals of childhood problems.

Surgeries are performed in the Ford Family Surgery Center - a state-of-the-art surgical facility designed specifically for children. Learn more about the Center and how to prepare for your child's surgery. Types of problems treated include:
  • Spinal deformities
  • Clubfoot
  • Congenital dislocation of the hip
  • Conditions such as Legg-Perthes disease, a rare hip disease
  • Musculoskeletal tumors - tumors in the bones, joints, ligaments, tendons, muscles or nerves
  • Sports-related conditions
  • Neuromuscular disease, such as cerebral palsy, with orthopedic manifestations
The Orthopedic Clinic works closely with the Motion and Gait Analysis Laboratory to perform gait analysis. This tests how a patient walks and identifies any abnormal walking patterns.

Preparing for a Procedure

Power PenguinFor kids. The Packard Kids Connection Web site helps children ages 5-12 to learn what it’s like to come to the hospital. Anesthesia is covered in the site's Getting Treated section. Kids can see what happens step-by-step and get to know who will be there to help them.

EmmiFor parents. Your child's doctor may ask that you view some important information using an online education program called Emmi® to prepare you for your child’s upcoming procedure. Information is available for:
  • ACL reconstruction
  • Anesthesia for your child
  • Bunionectomy with possible osteotomy
  • Knee arthroscopy
  • Spinal fusion for adolescent idiopathic scoliosis
This program takes about 20 minutes to complete.

Medical Mission to China

In 2009, Packard Children’s Hospital orthopedic surgeons James Gamble, MD, PhD, and Lawrence Rinsky, MD, traveled to the People’s Republic of China. They taught Chinese orthopedic surgeons current diagnostic and operative approaches used at Packard Children’s Hospital. While in Yantai, PRC, Drs. Gamble and Rinsky gave six lectures, performed 52 operative procedures on 38 children, and gave consultations on over 150 pediatric outpatients.
