Pediatric Sleep Service Overview

The pediatric service of the Stanford Sleep Disorders Clinic provides comprehensive evaluation and treatment for newborns through adolescents with disorders of sleepiness and sleeplessness, including:
  • Sleep apnea
  • Insomnia
  • Enuresis
  • Parasomnias (sleepwalking, sleeptalking and headbanging)
  • Narcolepsy
  • Sleep behavior problems
The Stanford Sleep Disorders Clinic was the first clinical service devoted to sleep disorders in the world and has been an international leader in establishing the speciality of Sleep Medicine. Working with children and their families has been an integral part of the clinic since the clinic first opened in 1970. It is one of the few comprehensive sleep clinics in the country with a pediatric service accredited by the American Academy of Sleep Medicine.

What to expect?
Coming to sleep clinic is like going to any other medical specialist. Your insurance may require pre-authorization which our staff may discuss with you at the time the appointment is made. You may be scheduled for an office visit initially or perhaps directly for a sleep study depending on the individual situation. During office visits, a history and physical examination will be conducted focusing on the sleep complaint. Office visits are scheduled for weekdays during the daytime.

Overnight sleep studies are scheduled 7 days a week and usually require spending 12 hours or longer at the clinic. If the child is scheduled for an overnight sleep study, a parent or guardian is expected to share the room with the child. The child should feel free to bring anything with them to make them feel comfortable and remind them of home (except pets!). Check in time is 7 pm so the child can become familiar with their bedroom. The child can go to sleep and wake up at their usual time. More details regarding the sleep test will be provided at the time the appointment is made.
