Pediatric General Surgeons Host Castilleja Career Day Participants
Pediatric general surgeons Craig Albanese, MD, MBA, and Claudia Mueller, MD, PhD, recently hosted a group of nine high school sophomores as part of the Castilleja School Career Day program.
The surgeons’ goals for hosting the program were not simply to expose students to the medical field. They also hoped to:
- Introduce the students to strong female role models
- Provide insight on the challenges and rewards of work/life balance
- Educate the future of science and medicine
- Promote diversity at an early age
- The Ford Family Surgery Center, where they observed surgeries, shadowed an anesthesiologist and learned about and manipulated the surgical robot used to perform minimally invasive surgeries
- The Goodman Simulation Center, where they learned to sew sutures, start IVs, manage an airway and perform laparoscopy (minimally invasive surgery)
