Parent Support Activities

 
The Stanford Autism Center at Packard Children’s Hospital is dedicated to supporting and providing community outreach programs to educate parents and professionals about autism spectrum disorders (ASDs).
 
 

Autism Spectrum Disorders: Educational Series for Parents

This educational series is for parents of children and adolescents with an Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD). The series is designed to provide parents with information about ASD including ways parents can support their children’s development and reduce inappropriate behaviors. Classes are divided into two 4–5 week modules: a General Information Module and a Building Skills at Home Module. Topics include behavioral interventions, social skills training, improving communication skills, and managing stress and disruptive behaviors.  Please come join other parents to learn new strategies, ask questions and share experiences. Parents are encouraged to attend all classes within a module but it is not required.

ASD Early Childhood
For parents of children ages 2–5 years
Meets Thursday mornings, 10:00–11:30 am, starting January 19, 2012
ASD School-Aged Children
For parents of children/adolescents ages 6–18 years
Meets Thursday evenings 6:00–7:30 pm, starting January 19, 2012

Autism Parent Support Group

Sponsored by the Stanford Autism Center at Packard Children's Hospital
Parents of children with autism face a unique set of challenges. The opportunity to connect with other families who have been through similar experiences can be a valuable form of support. Please join our monthly support group!
Topics for discussion will include: 
  • Advocating for your child 
  • Dealing with the impact on the entire family 
  • Navigating school and learning issues 
  • Investigating treatment options and resources
Please note that the support group is not intended to serve as therapy or other mental health services.

Parent Education Program

The Parent Education Program, directed by Linda Lotspeich, MD, MEd, was established in 2008. Its activities include: 
  • ¿Quieres saber más sobre el Autismo? is a repeating educational series offered to Spanish-speaking parents of children diagnosed with autism spectrum disorder (ASD). The series provides parents with information about ASD diagnoses, treatments and services. Maria Elena DeAnda, PhD, developed and runs the program. 

  • Guest lectures for parent groups through local school districts

  • Developing a monthly version of the Educational Series for Parents that will be video-conferenced to a parent group in the Monterey area
 
 

Collaborations with Schools

Center members have collaborated with local schools to provide autism spectrum disorders education through guest lectures and school visits.
 
 
 

Annual Autism Symposium

The Center’s annual autism symposium is a one-day conference that provides parents, teachers and care providers of children with autism spectrum disorder (ASD) the latest findings on research and clinical care.
 
 
 

Bay Area Walk for Autism

The Center partners each year with Autism Speaks. We fundraise for the event and have a booth at the annual Bay Area Walk Now for Autism. The Center hosted the 2010 kickoff meeting prior to the event, and plans continued collaboration with Autism Speaks in the future.
