Center for Healthy Weight Advocacy and Government Relations

The Center for Healthy Weight’s Advocacy and Government Relations program is actively involved in public and professional education to advocate for programs and policies to more effectively prevent and treat child and adolescent obesity.  Education and advocacy efforts include:
  • Medical student, house officer, faculty and community physician advocacy training

  • Development of advocacy curricula and projects for school-aged children and adolescents

  • Advocacy training and projects for parents, teachers and child care professionals

  • Institutional advocacy through Stanford University and Lucile Packard Children’s Hospital and their affiliations with state and national organizations (e.g., National Association of Children’s Hospitals and Related Institutions (NACHRI))

  • Providing professional representation and expertise to community coalitions (e.g., Healthy Santa Clara County Initiative, school health committees).  The Center for Healthy Weight and LPCH are already key participants and collaborators in many local, regional, national and international childhood obesity advocacy and policy initiatives.
“The obesity epidemic is caused by a toxic environment, one in which calories are plentiful, inexpensive and highly promoted; and where we have engineered physical activity out of our lives.  To turn back this epidemic we must create an environment that makes it easier to maintain energy balance, at home, at school, in the media and throughout our communities and all aspects of our lives” - Thomas Robinson, MD, MPH
