Center for Healthy Weight Community Partnerships

Because the problem of childhood and adolescent overweight and obesity goes well beyond individual, personal responsibility, physicians and staff at Lucile Packard Children’s Hospital (LPCH) are involved in several community-wide initiatives addressing the underlying causes of the problem:  poor nutrition and lack of physical activity.

LPCH is an active partner in the following collaborative community efforts to create healthier environments for our children:

Healthy Santa Clara County Collaborative

The Healthy Santa Clara County Collaborative is a multi-sector, multi-stakeholder effort involving the health care system, government agencies, the educational system, community-based organizations and the media working together to foster improved nutrition and increased physical activity in Santa Clara County.

The Collaborative serves as a planner, convener, broker and advocate to bring more than 40 organizations together around this critical public health problem.  LPCH is one of seven founding and funding organizations as leaders in this effort, joining:
  • The California Endowment
  • The David and Lucile Packard Foundation
  • The Community Foundation, Silicon Valley
  • The Health Trust
  • The Valley Foundation
  • The Council on Aging

San Mateo County Health Disparities Summit: Ending Health Disparities in San Mateo County

San Mateo County held its first Healthy Communities Summit: Ending Health Disparities in San Mateo County in May 2004.  More than 225 participants representing government, public health, educational, health system and community-based organizations attended.

A follow-up session was held in November to continue developing a framework for community and institutional strategies to reduce health disparities.  Based on local data from the Healthy San Mateo County 2010 reports and the 2004 Community Assessment report, the group decided to focus on Physical Activity/Nutrition/Overweight and obesity and on Tobacco/other substance abuse as main focus areas for community planning.
