Frequently Asked Questions about the Packard Pediatric Weight Control Program



Do we have to pay for the program?
An interested family can sign up for a free evaluation to determine if the Packard Pediatric Weight Control Program (PPWCP) is a good fit for them. The cost of the 25 session program is $3500 or $140 per session.
 
If you cannot afford to pay for the program and your insurance company will not pay or reimburse you, you may be eligible to receive financial assistance. Financial assistance is provided if a family is eligible and funds are available. The amount given to a family is determined by the family’s financial need.

Are there age restrictions?
Yes. Currently we offer these age-specific programs:
  • Children ages 8-12 (groups offered in both English and Spanish)
  • Adolescents ages 13-15 (groups offered in English)

How much does my child have to weigh to be considered for this program?
Your child or adolescent must have a Body Mass Index (BMI) greater than the 95th percentile to be eligible for the Packard Pediatric Weight Control Program. Children or adolescents with a BMI greater than the 85th percentile may also be eligible if they have an overweight parent, a medical complication (comorbidity), or a family history of comorbidities.

Where are the group sessions held?
The group sessions are currently held in Palo Alto, East Palo Alto and San Jose.

Do I need to attend every session with my child?
Yes, a parent or legal guardian is required to attend every group session with his/her child. Family support is an integral part of the program and parents need to learn to change their own behavior to help their child lose weight.
 
A non-legal guardian can attend the program if that person prepares a majority of the child’s food and has permission from the child’s legal guardian.

Does my child need to be referred by a physician or health care provider?
No, but your child must meet the eligibility criteria.

May I bring my other children to group sessions?
We encourage only the child and parent enrolled in the program to attend the group sessions. If a sibling does come, there will be parts of each session in which the sibling cannot participate. The sibling should bring homework or an activity to complete during this time. The parent will be responsible for the supervision of this child.

Will the program examine my child for any possible metabolic disorders?
No, the program does not provide medical examinations. Any parent concerned that their child might have a metabolic disorder or other medical problem causing weight gain should immediately contact their pediatrician to schedule an appointment.

Does the program use medical treatments such as drug therapy?
No. The program teaches behavioral skills to promote long-term healthy habits. We do not prescribe any medications or use any medical treatments. If you are interested in knowing more about medical treatment, please contact our Pediatric Weight Clinic.
