The Short Stay Unit serves children who require a hospital setting to receive medical treatment or to recover from procedures. Our services include:
- Infusions of medications through intravenous line (IV) access
- Chemotherapy
- Enzyme replacement therapy
- Steroid pulse therapy
- IV hydration
- Antiviral, antibiotic and antifungal therapy
- Immunoglobulin therapy
- Inhaled medications
- Extended recovery for patients following:
- Liver and renal biopsies done through a needle puncture of the skin (percutaneous)
- Cardiac catheterization, cardiac electrophysiology studies, and cardiac biopsies
- Gastrointestinal procedures
- Interventional radiology procedures
- A Post-Anesthesia Care Unit (PACU) stay
- Observation Status patients
- Removal of PICC lines or repair of tunneled lines
- Blood draws through central lines
Information for Referring Health Care Providers
Physicians with Packard Children’s Hospital admitting privileges may utilize the Short Stay Unit.Facility
The Short Stay Unit has:
- Six shared double rooms
- Two private rooms, one of which has negative pressure for isolation
- A procedure room that can be used for blood draws and prep work
- The Packard Children’s Hospital admission criteria apply to the Short Stay Unit
- Electronic orders are required prior to admission day
- All pre-scheduled appointments require preauthorization from the referring physician’s office to the Short Stay Unit receptionist

The responsible physician must:
- Be identified at initiation of treatment or therapy
- Be available onsite, by pager, or by telephone for consultation (or arrange for coverage by a hospitalist)
This form is for all services who wish to schedule any infusions, central line blood draws, inhaled medications, or procedure recovery time in the Short Stay Unit. Please note that Observation Status Patients go through Patient Placement.
