Welcome to the Trauma Service
The Stanford University Medical Center became a trauma center in 1986, and since 1998 has been recognized as a Level I Trauma Center, the highest level awarded by the American College of Surgeons.
Stanford provides specialized care to approximately 1,500 trauma patients per year from Santa Clara and San Mateo counties. We receive patients from many outlying counties in addition to interfacility transports of patients who need Stanford's expertise. Patients are transported directly to our facility by paramedics and flight crews, such as Stanford's Life Flight. The Stanford Trauma Center incorporates the adjoining Lucile Packard Children's Hospital, where children under 17 are admitted after stabilization in the emergency department (ED) or operating room (OR).
