Family-Centered Care Program

Our Philosophy of Family-Centered Care: Partnerships for Excellence in Health Care

The Family-Centered Care (FCC) Program at Lucile Packard Children’s Hospital (LPCH) is a group of parents and professionals working in partnership to help LPCH develop programs and practices responsive to the unique needs, preferences and skills of the children it cares for and their families.

LPCH understands the pivotal role the family plays in a child’s health care needs. With FCC’s guidance and leadership, the hospital promotes partnerships between families and health care providers at all levels of care:  at the bedside, in the clinic and in the development of hospital programs and policies.
  • Caregiving Partnerships
FCC strives to support families in their caregiving role by building on their unique strengths and individual preferences.  At the heart of this commitment is the development of health care practices that provide opportunities for parents to work with staff to determine their role for participating on the health care team and in making health care decisions that are in the best interest of their child and their family.

  • Program and Policy Partnerships
FCC strives to provide opportunities for parents to participate in the development of family-centered health care practices, programs and policies.  This is done through parent participation on advisory councils, as educators and as mentors.
The FCC team also provides opportunities for families and staff to share their perspective on family-centered parent-to-professional and parent-to-parent partnerships.

Caregiving Partnership Quotes

Parent Perspectives
“The doctors respect your wishes—and they ask and tell you what they are going to do and they explain as they are doing it.  So I can really be involved.”

“The docs and nurses at LPCH are great about providing info on what to do; give this med; do this procedure—but sometimes I need more information on how to get it accomplished—how do I fit it into family life—what’s the least intrusive?”

“I figured out how to track Simon’s meds on my own—I’d like to share my method with other parents.”

“Meeting other parents has really helped me to figure out the best ways to care for my child.”

“When you are in and out of the hospital as much as we are you become pretty experienced—I’ve learned things—things that might help other families.”

“I want to know everything the doctors are thinking so that I can be involved in every important health care decision.”

Staff Perspectives
“The parents and I work together on the plan for the day.”

“I’m always asking—how can I make this go better for you?”

“I help parents figure out what works best for them—how to navigate the hospital.”

“I try to help the parent figure out the best role for them in caring for their child—especially when it’s their first time in the hospital—but we also work together to decide how they want to be involved in the many medical decisions that are made each day.”
