Parents as Educators

Parents as Educators Overview

Parents as Educators is one of Lucile Packard Children’s Hospital’s (LPCH) family-centered care programs.  Parents as Educators promotes family-centered care by providing:
  • The parent perspective through training programs for health care providers
  • Information and role models for other parents during parent hours and family information classes

Staff Education Program

  • Family-Centered Care Video
A training video examining different approaches to partnerships between parents and staff was developed at LPCH.  The video was produced by nationally recognized Kikim Media, winner of three Emmy Awards and two Peabody Awards and creator of KQED documentaries such as The Search for Law and Order: Reclaiming America’s Kids.

  • Speaking Events
    • New nursing student orientation
    • Volunteer appreciation events
    • Auxiliary meetings
    • Staff training sessions
    • Resident in-service

  • Champions Training
The program will soon launch an ”FCC Champions Training” for LPCH staff, using the FCC video, interactive discussion groups and the Center for Advanced Pediatric Education (CAPE) simulation center.

Family Education Program

  • LPCH Parent Participant Training Program
A three part, five hour interactive training program which orients parent leaders, speakers and mentors to the principles of family-centered care.
    • Part One is a two hour group training that covers the definition of family-centered care, putting FCC in practice and sharing parent stories to promote change in health care.
    • Part Two is a one hour personal interview with staff, covering the parent’s experience with his/her child’s hospitalization.
    • Part Three is a two hour session with small group discussions that address how parents use their stories to promote family-centered care via “teachable moments.”  Parents learn to highlight partnerships with staff in their roles as educators, mentors, policy advocates and parent leaders.

  • Web-based Parent Tool Kit (in development)
An online tool kit, developed by FCC parent participants and staff champions, will provide families with information on:
    • How to determine the “best-fit” partnership role
    • Suggestions on nurturing a child in a hospital setting
    • Strategies on tracking medications
    • Coordinating multiple health care providers

  • Parent Hour
Parents participate with staff at informational groups facilitated by social workers to disseminate information and provide support to new LPCH parents.
