Parents as Mentors Overview
Parents as Mentors is one of Lucile Packard Children’s Hospital’s (LPCH) family-centered care programs. The program provides opportunities for trained, veteran LPCH parents, supervised by social workers, to meet with parents of children cared for at LPCH in a variety of settings: in the hospital, during clinic visits and at home by telephone.
The degree to which a family can partner with health care providers can directly impact a family’s ability to effectively manage their child’s future medical requirements. Parent Mentors are effective managers of their own child’s health care and are trained to provide support, modeling, suggestions and validation to parents of hospitalized children who are just beginning their own partnerships.
The goal of mentorship is to:
- Provide peer support
- Help parents navigate the hospital system
- Share strategies on developing partnerships
- Aid parents in developing confidence in their skills to manage their child’s health care
Connection with mentors can be a one-time meeting or a long-term, ongoing relationship.

Mentor Programs
- The Liver and Intestinal Transplant Parent Mentor Program
Ten Parent Mentors provide mentorship in English and Spanish for pre- and posttransplant families admitted to the hospital, in clinic and during new patient evaluations. This program also includes outpatient mentors at the team’s outreach sites in Portland/Seattle, Hawaii, Sacramento and Fresno.
- The Johnson Center/Neonatology Parent Mentor Program
Mentors work weekly, visiting families in the Neonatal Intensive Care Unit (NICU), the Intermediate Intensive Care Unit (IICU), and women hospitalized before the birth of their child in the antepartum unit.
- The Cystic Fibrosis Parent Mentor Program
The Cystic Fibrosis Parent Mentor program consists of a “warm line” staffed by a mentor. Parents request an opportunity to speak with the mentor and are subsequently contacted via telephone.
