Twin Transplants

Sophia and Charlotte Gonzales were born with a rare genetic disorder that inhibits the body's ability to break down protein and some fats. Packard Children's Hospital is among a small handful of institutions pioneering the treatment the girls received: They received liver transplants at an unusually early age to try to ward off the disease's worst effects.
