PALO ALTO, Calif--
Researchers at Lucile Packard Children’s Hospital and Stanford University are studying the safety and effectiveness of a new atypical anti-psychotic medication to improve behavioral problems such as agitation and aggression in children with autism. This medication has been approved by the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) for the treatment of adult individuals with bipolar disorder and schizophrenia. In order to participate in this research study, children must:

Be between the ages of 6 and 17 years

Have a diagnosis of autistic disorder

Meet behavioral questionnaire guidelines
There is no cost to participate in this research study. A total of eight subjects will be enrolled, and participants will be reimbursed for costs associated with study visits. This is an eight-week study, and could possibly include up to 10 visits by participants. The multi-center trial is being funded by Bristol-Myers Squibb. Principal investigator locally will be Antonio Hardan, MD, Director of the Autism and Developmental Disabilities Clinic at Lucile Packard Children's Hospital and Assistant Professor of Psychiatry and Behavioral Sciences at the Stanford University School of Medicine.
