Stanford Hospital & Clinics and Lucile Packard Children’s Hospital Disappointed Nurses Do Not Accept Last, Best and Final Offer

For Release: March 22, 2007

STANFORD, Calif-- Stanford Hospital & Clinics (SHC) and Lucile Packard Children’s Hospital (LPCH) expressed disappointment today that the membership of the union representing registered nurses at both hospitals have voted to not accept the hospitals’ Last, Best and Final offer for new contracts. The hospitals have been working to reach an agreement before the current contracts expire on March 31.

The offer presented to the Committee for Recognition of Nursing Achievement (CRONA) included pay raises totaling more than 15 percent over three years, which would make SHC and LPCH nurses among the best compensated in the Bay Area.   The offer includes increases to other wage benefits and an enhancement to the retirement plan.

“We value our nurses and recognize their dedication and commitment to providing the highest quality care to our patients and families,” said Martha H. Marsh, President and Chief Executive Officer of Stanford Hospital & Clinics. “We approached these negotiations focused on addressing the issues that are of greatest concern to our CRONA-represented employees, and we believe our Last, Best and Final offer is very fair and competitive.”

The Hospitals have been in negotiations with CRONA leadership to reach new contracts since the beginning of the year.  Despite this vote, the Hospitals remain hopeful the negotiations will conclude without incident.

“Patient care is our number one priority,” said Christopher G. Dawes, President and Chief Executive Officer of Lucile Packard Children's Hospital.  “This offer is mindful of the exceptional work of our nurses and, most importantly, the high quality care our patients have come to expect and depend on from our hospitals.”
