PALO ALTO, Calif--

Those words from Christopher Dawes, president and chief executive officer at Lucile Packard Children’s Hospital, are in reaction to news that Packard Children’s has once again made the U.S.News & World Report Top 10 list of the finest pediatric institutions in the United States. In its September 3 “America’s Best Children’s Hospitals” issue hitting newsstands August 27, the magazine places Lucile Packard Children’s Hospital #10 among pediatric hospitals nationwide and #1 in California.
While, in the past, pediatric hospitals have been ranked based on reputation alone in the magazine's annual “America’s Best Hospitals” issue, this expanded children's hospital ranking is based not only on reputation, but also on data and statistics about hospital performance and quality of care.
Dawes is proud of the distinction and what it represents. “Our placement on the U.S.News Top 10 list is recognition of what our faculty and staff have built and continue to build -- a nationally and internationally pre-eminent children’s hospital.” Founded in 1991, Packard Children’s Hospital is the youngest hospital on the U.S.News Top 10 list.
The U.S.News honor adds to a growing list of recent highlights at the hospital, which include:

Winning the national award for Excellence in Pediatric Patient Care from the Child Health Corporation of America for outstanding rapid response performance

The creation of innovative clinical programs such as a clinic to teach teens with liver transplants how to care for themselves as adults and a group to help parents of autistic children integrate therapy into their daily lives

The opening of the first pediatric-focused Cyberknife radiosurgery unit on the West Coast, giving more young children and infants a non-invasive alternative to traditional surgery

The launch of Packard Kids Connection at kids.lpch.org, an innovative and interactive Web site to help children prepare for the hospital experience
The hospital’s success has led to an unprecedented expansion of services. In addition to the recent additions of a dedicated Children’s Heart Center and dialysis treatment center, the hospital will bring its special blend of care and expertise to children in the South Bay and beyond with the Fall 2007 opening of its new South Bay Specialty Center. In the coming year, Packard Children’s will also premiere seven new pediatric surgical suites, a cardiovascular intensive care unit, a new pediatric cancer center and a total of 39 new inpatient beds.
“We take on some of the most challenging cases, both from around the corner and around the world,” said Dawes. “The Isurvey reflects this. It’s wonderful to see our success recognized in this way.”
